CARRARA, GOLD COAST | 07.05.22 | Mark Majdandzic
The Gold Coast derby is set for its first edition of the 2022 season and this could be one of the most highly anticipated variation of them all! Here are three things to know as we head into the game this afternoon;
Both teams come into the clash fresh off midweek wins, with the Knights defeating Logan away and United defeating Brisbane Roar at home. United will be hopeful of backing up their performance last week after drawing in the final seconds against heavyweights Lions FC. Despite the recent losses heading into this week, Knights will feel confident of continuing their form from midweek as long as they can capitalise on the final third.
This season has been marred by wet weather like never before and there has only been one direct fixture not impacted by rain of some sort. Damp conditions, heavy fields and rain in general has been the story of the 2022 season and both sides will be used to playing in that type of weather. The forecast for the derby doesn’t get much better with heavy rain expected to fall hours before kick off and during the game itself which could provide its own twist and turns.
Derby games are always measured on who can live up to the emotions and hard natured approach rather than the best side on paper. Both teams have stacks of talent and the last time this corresponding fixture was played United secured the biggest derby result away from home in a 4-0 rout. Although a much different Knights outfit is on show this time around, it will be crucial for the red, white and blue to be up for it from minute one to defeat a United side hoping to continue their form from the final game of 2021.
