Three Things to Know: Knights at Wanderers – 10/04/22

BUDERIM, SUNSHINE COAST | 10.4.22 | Mark Majdandzic

Sunday afternoon action up on the Sunshine Coast sees a tricky fixture against Sunshine Coast Wanderers stand in the way for the Gold Coast Knights. Kick off is scheduled for 4:15pm at Ballinger Park.

Here are three things to know before tonight’s match up:

Sunshine Coast Wanderers are renowned for their aerial presence over the years and the 2022 season will be much the same for the Buderim based side. Having plenty of aerial presence across the field the Wanderers will pose a threat should the Knights not be solid and win the aerial battle.

Having size and presence in the red, white and blue will be crucial to ensure that the duels are won and the strong nature of the Wanderers is negated allowing the Knights to play their brand of football throughout the fixture.

The nature of NPL QLD this season has seen plenty of red cards and disciplinary action against reckless challenges. The Wanderers opening game saw a handful of red cards dished out so it will be crucial to maintain a physical presence on the ground but a fair presence. Losing that calm natured play style and focus on the job at hand could be detrimental should the Knights get caught up in all the bits and pieces.

Having already played a tough away matches against Lions FC and Capalaba FC, the Knights will be hoping to take on the positives of those games and bring them into this fixture.

Across both the NPL QLD and Australia Cup the Knights have had a great start to the 2022 season under Scott McDonald. The Sunshine Coast fixture has always been a difficult trip for the Knights having yet to win at Ballinger Park in two meetings. The last time the Knights were victorious on the Sunshine Coast was a 2019 match up against the now QPL side Sunshine Coast Fire.

A win against a well drilled Sunshine Coast Wanderers would put the Knights in a strong position heading into the middle stages of the first round.
