Three Things to Know: City at Knights – 02/04/22

CARRARA | 02.4.22 | Mark Majdandzic

Finally the first home game of the year is upon us as the ground staff have managed to prepare the field after the downpour earlier in the week! This week the Knights welcome Brisbane City to the Croatian Sports Centre in Round 5 action with kick off scheduled for 4:30pm!

Here are three things to know before tonight’s clash.

ESTABLISHING A HOME FORTRESS

Last season was a down year for the Knights when it came to home ground superiority. However, prior to the 2021 season it was extremely rare to take all three points from the Croatian Sports Centre across not only the NPL competition but also going back to the local Coast League and Premier League era. The Knights will want to establish a home presence this season and ensure that opposition points are an afterthought when travelling to Carrara.

Last season’s four home losses were the only time the Knights had lost at home across the three year stretch in the NPL with undefeated records in both 2019 and 2020.

LAST TIME ROUND

Our opponents this afternoon Brisbane City did not play in the NPL QLD last season having been relegated in 2020. In the only four meetings against the Azzuri through 2019 and 2020 the Knights have yet to taste defeat winning three out of the four games. The subsequent fixture in the last time we met saw a 2-2 draw between the two sides at the Croatian Sports Centre.

However, a new look City side will be eager to re-write the history against the Knights and pick up their first win in the first meeting of the season.

EXECUTE EARLY, RIDE IT OUT LATE

In the last fixture against Capalaba FC the Knights left it late to get on top and eventually take all three points from John Frederick Field. Out of the 8 goals scored in the opening two matches 7 have come in the second half of the match. With plenty of firepower in the front third the Knights will be looking to get on top in the match early and finish their chances to set up a strong second half.

Statistically speaking the proof is there that goals are available in the second period but being able to ride out a lead in the latter stages could be pivotal to the successes moving forward in 2022.
