Lions FC score at the death to claim a 3-2 victory over the Knights in the opening round of the 2021 NPL season.

Lions FC forward Joe Duckworth managed to split the Knights defence and open the scoring after the quarter of the hour mark before former Lions FC Czech striker Marek Madle opened his account for the Knights and the 2021 season, with a composed finish from a Jheison Macuace square ball to level things heading into the break.

It was a chaotic start to the second half, with Lions once again taking the lead through new signing Finn Beakhurst in the 54th minute.

Madle was once again involved in a major part of the game, receiving a second yellow shortly after to see the Knights go down to 10 men while trailing by a goal.

With the man disadvantage and the quality of the Lions side to contend with, Knights continued to battle for the remainder of the match, eventually being rewarded within the final ten minutes of the game.

After a crafty play in the attacking third, it was Max Brown who adjusted quickly and got his head onto a cross, rocketing it in the back of the net to level things heading into the final exchanges.

With Knights continuing to hold on and defend well throughout the remainder of the game, it wasn’t to be as Lions FC once again got the go ahead goal through Tommy Jarrad, earning them a big 3 points with one of the final touches of the game.

Much can be taken from the result for the Knights however, after facing the 2020 champions with ten men for over one third of the match.

The attention for the Knights now turns to the home opener against Brisbane Strikers this weekend.

The match is scheduled for 4:00pm kick off on Saturday the 13th of March.
