Match Report: Strikers 1 GCK 2

Gold Coast Knights FC have made it two wins from two to start the 2020 season with a 2-1 victory over Brisbane Strikers last night at Perry Park.

After taking an early lead through a Jheison Macuace strike, the Knights were pegged back by the Strikers midway through the half.

With both sides going for the win in the latter stages of the second half, it was substitute Jarrod Kyle returning from suspension who got on the end of a ball into the box and ultimately gave the Knights the win with his first goal of the season.

Head Coach Grae Piddick had nothing but praise for his side and the hard work they showed with the short turn around.

“It was always going to be difficult for both sides backing up in such a short space of time but the boys battled well which is the sign of a good team,” said Piddick.

“Strikers pressed and pushed for the win for the duration of the 90 minutes so it was good for us to get all three points out of the clash.”

With new signing Macuace getting on the scoresheet for two consecutive games to begin the season and captain Mitch Nichols putting in two dominant performances, Piddick applauded the two for their start and hoped they can build on what they’ve created.

“We know what Jheison can do and he has proved that so far. His creative ability but also his off the ball work has been contagious on our squad and it is great to witness. As for Mitch, he has been fantastic throughout the year so far in whatever role we have thrown at him and really streered the ship in the right direction,” said Piddick.

The night was capped off with a debut for young midfielder Ewan Macleod, featuring in the first team off the bench.

“Ewan has been training really well to begin the year and got his chance in the game. I thought he was impressive for the time he was on the pitch and we will continue to work on bringing these quality young players through whenever we can,” said Piddick.

The Knights now turn their focus to the round 4 clash against Redlands United away this weekend. Kick off is scheduled for 7pm at Compass Grounds.
