Gold Coast Knights FC have taken all three points in the first match of the 2020 NPL season, defeating Olympic FC 3-1!
With the build up to the game very much like a cup final, the Knights turned up the heat in key moments throughout the match to get one over the NPL runners up from the 2019 season.
After trailing through a Jez Lofthouse goal at the quarter of an hour mark, it was playmaker Max Brown who scored to level proceedings before new signing Jheison Macuace gave the Knights the lead heading into the break.
Shortly after the resumption of the match, it was Knights captain Mitch Nichols who gave the home side a two goal buffer with his strike finding the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Head Coach Grae Piddick said he was very happy with the way his side applied themselves throughout the 90 minutes.
“Considering it was our first match of the season and their second, I am happy with the way the boys finished the 90 minutes and stuck to the plan for the duration of the game.”
“Olympic didn’t allow us to settle in the early periods but after the goal we started to play the way we know we can and started creating opportunities in front of goal,” said Piddick.
Although the Knight started slow to begin, it was the way they finished the match that impressed Piddick.
“We expected that to be the case at the beginning of the match having not played a game in three weeks or so. Towards the back end of the first half we would have loved another 10 minutes as we probably could have gone on and got another.”
The Knights will now turn their focus to the Round 1 catch up fixture against Brisbane Strikers this Tuesday the 25th of February at Perry Park.
