Gold Coast Knights FC have dropped their first points of the 2020 NPL Queensland season with a 1-1 draw at home against Moreton Bay United.
Things started positively for the Knights, with Jheison Macuace getting on the scoresheet just after the half hour mark to give the home side a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
However, things would turn with half an hour left to play, when attacking player Nicholas Panetta was shown a straight red for his altercation with a Moreton Bay player, resulting in the Knights running out the remainder of the game with 10 men.
A last minute equaliser from the visitors resulted in the points being split, much to the disappointment of Head Coach Grae Piddick.
“We’re disappointed to drop two points right at the death of the match considering we played the majority of the second half with 10 men,” said Piddick.
“I couldn’t fault the effort from the boys out on the park because we still continued to push forward when we dropped down a man. We just hurt ourselves by not finishing the game off in the first half.”
The Knights now turn their focus to a rematch with Moreton Bay in the FFA Cup, with the fixture set to be played away from home.
“We now know we need to execute our chances when they present themselves come this weekend. It would have been good to take all three points with the grit we showed but we will move on and focus on the games coming up,” said Piddick.
