Gold Coast Knights have returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Brisbane City at Corporate Travel Management Stadium on Saturday night.
Jheison Macauce’s second half strike proved the difference between the sides as Knights came away with all three points.
Macuace bagged his ninth goal of the season in 60th minute when he coolly slotted home a Max Brown through ball from just inside the area after City failed to adequately clear Mitch Nichols’ initial free-kick.
Despite coming close on a number of occasions Knights were unable to further impact the scoring against a City side who finished with ten men after defender, Nathan Beagley received his marching orders in the 73rd minute.
Beagley received his second caution of the evening when he dragged down Knights forward, Harrison Sawyer deep inside his own half.
Saturday’s win sees Knights, who remain undefeated in 2020 maintain their position alongside Lions atop the NPL Queensland standings.
Speaking post-match, Knights Head Coach, Grae Piddick said things were beginning to click for his side.
“When you don’t win your first two matches it’s always good to make sure you win your next one, no matter how you do it,” Piddick said.
“We’ll take the 1-0 of course, but I thought our performance was significantly better than the previous week.
“In the first half, the boys stuck to the game plan and it worked perfectly, with a bit more luck we could’ve had a few goals, the goalkeeper made plenty of good saves too.
“The thing for us is we’ve been a little bit underdone so our second halves haven’t been great in the first two matches.
“We spoke about it at half time and what we needed to do and obviously it was an improved second half.
“That was our best second half so far and we were rewarded with the goal, it could’ve been a few more but we’ll take the 1-0.”
Knights now face a week off with the bye before welcoming Young Roar to the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday, August 22.
Piddick said there’s plenty more to come from his side as the season kicks back into full swing.
“When we get the ball moving and we play with our swagger, it’s hard for teams to contain us, but when confidence is a little bit down from not winning that’s hard to do,” Piddick said.
“There were patches when that happened, but we’re learning to play through that. I’ve said it all along, within four or five weeks these boys will be flying.
“It was a step up from last week, we’ll get back on the training paddock and we’ll keep working hard. I’ve got full faith in all of them, the players that have come in after only a few weeks of training.
“We know we’ll get better physically, the boys are committed to doing that and you could see they were up for it tonight, I think they proved that to everyone.
“As long as they keep doing that, we’ll keep getting better.”
