Knights Held at Ballinger Park

BUDERIM, SUNSHINE COAST | 11.4.22 | Mark Majdandzic

Gold Coast Knights have been held to a 1-1 draw at Sunshine Coast Wanderers on Sunday evening after Will Peck’s equaliser could not be followed up.

Ballinger Park has not been a happy stomping ground for the Knights in the past and the home side went ahead courtesy of Ethan Galbraith’s flick tucking itself in the back post on the 20th minute mark.

Plenty of possession and entry into the final third could not be converted by the Knights as chances fell to majority of the frontline who were unable to convert leaving a 1-0 deficit heading into the break.

The second half started similar to how it ended with Knights holding the possession but unable to find the cutting edge to get back into the game.

Knights keeper Josh Langdon was called into action in close succession keeping the red, white and blue in the game allowing a fighting opportunity.

The game turned on its head with 25 minutes to go as goalscorer Galbraith was shown his second yellow and subsequent red card which put even more pressure on his side as they looked to hold on.

Relentless attacking pursuits from the Knights continued without much success as the clock began to dwindle down into the latter stages of the match.

With three minutes to go in regular time a Max Brown corner was met by Mitch Nichols who’s chance deflected into the path of defender Will Peck who fired the Knights level and with their tails up for the final exchanges of the match.

However the winner could not come the way of the visiting side as numerous other chances were given but not taken with points dropped for the first time in the 2022 campaign.

Knights Head Coach Scott McDonald said that he knew what to expect from the Wanderers.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and they execute their plan well. We switched off for the goal and got punished.”

“Our first half was totally inept and not what we expect from our squad. I would have liked more reward at the end of the day and we should have won the game from the send off,” said McDonald.

The Knights now look towards a big clash on Easter Saturday against reigning NPL QLD Premiership Winners Peninsula Power at AJ Kelly Park. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30pm.
