Newcastle Olympic from the Northern NSW NPL competition visit the Croatian Sports Centre this weekend in a pre-season friendly. Many Knights fans and general football public on the Gold Coast won’t know much about our opponents so here is a quick snap shot of what we can expect from Olympic on the weekend.

The Northern NSW NPL competition has been a solid breeding ground for talent over the years and Newcastle Olympic were founded in 1976 and are one of the most successful clubs in Newcastle. A consistent participant in the competition, Olympic’s last Premiership win came in 2012.

The 2021 season in Northern NSW as abruptly suspended after 16 games with Olympic finishing 7th in the league standings. Under Head Coach Joel Griffiths the team is hopeful of bouncing back in 2022 and completing a full season with title aspirations firmly in mind. The club also made the latter stages of the FFA Cup, falling at the Round of 32 stage to Macarthur FC.

The club was built by the Greek community based in Newcastle and first competed in the Northern NSW 4thDivision under the Newcastle Olympic banner. After 16 years in the lower divisions, the club achieved promotion into the then first division after winning three automatic promotions. The “Golden Years” of the club came under the stewardship of Greg Smith who led them to four consecutive Premiership victories from 1998-2001.

Due to the spike in COIVD-19 cases the Surf City Cup was postponed for the 2022 edition.
