GOLD COAST- 06.2.22– by Mark Majdandzic
The beginning of any regular season brings a new buzz and excitement amongst any sporting code or team. The chance to repeat the successes of the previous season or write the wrongs of years gone by looms for all clubs and 2022 is no different for the Gold Coast Knights.
Despite a successful Round of 16 run in the FFA Cup, the NPL QLD season posed a number of questions for the Knights with one of their worst finishes to the campaign since the dawn of the “new era” at the Croatian Sports Centre.
Under newly appointed Head Coach Scott Mcdonald and a host of new signings to bolster the existing squad, the Knights are primed to bounce back big in 2022 with less than 20 days to go before the start of the season.
However, the club has seen a host of core players remain in the squad throughout the changes in personnel with three players surpassing the 100 games mark for the club since 2016 and another two players set to possibly pass this mark throughout the 2022 season. Here is a look into who the five players are for the Knights. (NOTE: Appearances include NPL Regular Season/Finals, GCPL Regular Season/Finals, FFA Cup Games)
5. Mitch Nichols- 80 games
Since joining the club in the 2019 season, Nichols has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Knights and played a huge part in the NPL Grand Final win against Olympic. Nichols brings a sense of calm throughout the Knights having played at the highest level and will look to play his part in the successes of the upcoming season.
4. Jaiden Walker- 93 games
Jaiden Walker joined the Knights in the final GCPL season back in 2018 and has played every year since. Spending a brief time away from the club during that year, Walker is set to surpass the 100 game mark for the Knights throughout this campaign.
3. Josh Langdon- 109 games
Josh Langdon has been a mainstay between the sticks for the Knights as he enters his fifth season at the club. Playing an integral part through every major run that the club has had since 2016, Langdon’s progression has seen him elevate himself as one of the best keepers within Queensland.
2. Matthew Schmidt- 114 games
Arriving at the Knights in 2018, Matthew Schmidt became a crowd favourite early on at the Knights and has remained a cornerstone of the team during his time at the club. The left sided player has shown strength both defensively and offensively over the years and will continue to rack up the appearances for the red, white and blue
1. Max Brown- 116 games
Since 2016 no player has featured in more competitive fixtures for the Knights than midfielder Max Brown. Having burst on the scene for the Knights in the 2018 GCPL season, Brown has never looked back and continues to be a presence especially in the attacking third.
We look forward to seeing these five in action throughout the 2022 season as well as the new compliment of players looking to break into the top appearance getters for the Knights! Our 2022 Season Memberships are ON SALE NOW! Follow the link below to purchase yours today!
